NEW DELHI: Justifying Delhi Police’s action of reaching Rahul Gandhi’s residence to record his statement, BJP on Sunday said rape In India was a cognisable offence and police were duty-bound to record the statement of someone who had made an allegation.
“Rahul should have come forward and recorded his statement about allegations of rape he made. Since he didn’t come forward, Delhi Police was duty bound to approach him and record his statement,” said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra, adding Congress is unnecessarily raking up the issue.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma hit out at the Congress member over his remarks about a woman in J&K, who said she was sexually harassed. Rahul said he met her during Bharat Jodo Yatra. Sarma asked Rahul to provide details of the incident so that the authorities concerned can take action. “If he will not give the names of the women (of alleged sexual harassment) then how will they get justice?” he asked.
Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Union minister Anurag Thakur wondered if Rahul was trying to hide something. “It has become a habit of some people to remain in limelight by saying anything. But they don’t understand the seriousness of the subject. If Rahul is serious about women’s issues, then he should give information. What is he hiding? Was it a lie then or is he lying now… only he can tell,” he said.
