The Canberra Raiders have been hit with a brutal injury blow to young star Xavier Savage, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Savage, who was playing in just his third NRL game at fullback on the weekend, gave Canberra fans a glimpse of what’s to come in the future as the Raiders kept their finals hopes alive with a win over the Sharks.

The 19-year-old during the match produced a starring role with 246 run metres, nine tackle-breaks, two line-breaks and a try to his name, and did it all despite suffering a shoulder injury during the second half.

While Savage played on and remained hopeful after the game that the injury was only minor, it’s since been confirmed following scans that he will require surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

“The injury to the AC joint in his shoulder is worse than first hoped and he will require surgery which will see him miss the remainder of the 2021 season,” a club statement said.

It’s a cruel blow for the teen star who was lauded for keeping the Raiders in the game last weekend during the crucial moments in the match.

“You’ve got to say, a star is born here,” Andrew Voss said on commentary for Fox League at the time.

“The X-factor, Xavier Savage. Sensational! We’re watching a kid set the stadium alight.”

Young Raider’s brilliance sets up try

The club also confirmed duo Jack Wighton and Elliott Whitehead will need at least one more week to recover from their respective injuries.

“Jack Wighton (Ribs) and Elliott Whitehead (Shoulder) will be unavailable for selection this week after it was decided to give them an extra week to recover from their injuries,” the club revealed.
