Ram Gopal Varma, a renowned filmmaker, recently expressed high praise for ‘The Kerala Story,’ starring Adah Sharma. The film, which premiered last year, revolves around the alleged forced conversion of a group of women from Kerala to Islam and their subsequent involvement with ISIS.
In a conversation with Galatta Plus, RGV commended the film, despite its polarizing reception, which some critics accused of attempting to create societal divisions. He pointed out the film’s impressive box office performance while lamenting the lack of attention for the subsequent project from the same creative team, ‘Bastar: The Naxal Story.’
The filmmaker shared an intriguing perspective on the unpredictable nature of film success. Reflecting on his own career, he remarked, “Long time back, AR Rahman told me that when he’s making a tune, he thinks that it’ll be the blockbuster of the year. But when the song comes out, people ignore it. They don’t even call it bad, they pretend like it doesn’t even exist; there are umpteen examples to prove this. In my own case, all my hit films are accidents, and my flops are intentional because I put in the same effort.”
Delving deeper into his admiration for ‘The Kerala Story,’ Ram Gopal Varma described it as one of the finest films he has encountered in recent years. He stated, “I was very, very happy with this film, ‘The Kerala Story.’ It’s one of the best films I’ve seen in many years. I spoke to the director (Sudipto Sen), I spoke to the producer (Vipul Shah), I spoke to the actress (Adah Sharma). Then, I was shocked to know that the next film (Bastar: The Naxal Story) came, released, and went, and I wasn’t even aware of it. It comes and everyone ignores it. How do you explain it?”
