Xavi: ‘We played the worst possible game’

Xavi spoke to Spanish TV network Movistar after Barcelona’s dreadful performance: “It’s disappointing. We are sad, but this is football. We played the worst possible game. It started horribly, then we got a bit back to it but the 3-1 (goal) was extremely painful. We have not been comfortable at any time, we have dominated at times, but we missed the chances we got.
“I apologize to the fans because we have struggled to compete. We’ve shown our worst version. But I’ve lived through a lot of defeats in my career and Barcelona always responds. We will fight and come back from this.
“We hope this makes us compete better in the future. Tough days will come. We’ll have to face a lot of criticism, but it’s deserved as we’ve been below the club’s standards.”

This is Real Madrid’s 13th time winning the Spanish Super Cup. They trail Barcelona by just one for the most in the competition’s history.
Since the Super Cup expanded to four teams, Real have won three of five editions.

Carvajal called his shot

When Barcelona beat Real Madrid in Texas in a pre-season friendly in July, Dani Carvajal had this to say in response: “When it’s time for real competitions, we will be above Barcelona, I’m sure of it.”
Seems he was right!
Xavi hits new low

Xavi has become the eighth manager in Barcelona history to concede four or more goals in at least two games against Real Madrid.
The last manager to do so was Frank Rijkaard in 2005 and 2008.
Nacho calmed Vini Jr down

After the match, Nacho spoke about needing to calm down Vinicius Jr: “Well, we know what he’s like… he’s a hot player, but a spectacular player.”
Ancelotti didn’t want to rub salt in Barca’s wounds

Carlo Ancelotti as classy as always on Spanish TV speaking after the win: “The scoreline was a bit harsh, for how Barca had played. Things got a bit heated at the end. I don’t like backheels. I said it to Vinicius and to Bellingham, we did not need to do those.”
Real have embarrassed Barca twice in nine months
(Getty Images)
Real Madrid have now scored four goals in two of their last three matches against Barcelona, having also done so in a 4-0 win in the Copa del Rey semi-finals in April of last season.
That matches the number of times they had scored four goals against Barca across their previous 73 meetings!
Kroos ran the game for Real
(Getty Images)
Toni Kroos was exceptional again tonight, and the whistles he received from Saudi fans will have just added to his enjoyment.
The German ran the game, as he so often does. He had 76 touches and completed 62 out of 65 passes attempted, along with recording three tackles, two interceptions and one blocked shot, which made for an impressive performance, as usual.
But they do not tell the full story of Kroos’ influence both in keeping Real Madrid moving and stopping Barca completely.
What could this blowout mean for Xavi?

Referee Martínez Munuera blows up right on 90 minutes, putting Barca out of their misery.
I get the feeling that the repercussions for Xavi and Barca might be more significant than the celebrations by Madrid and Ancelotti…

80′ Real Madrid 4-1 Barcelona
There were many doubts about Real’s XI in the run-up to this game, but this victory can serve as a turning point for Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian manager has already said that Lunin will play against Atlético de Madrid in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, and in the lead-up to today he defended Ferland Mendy. The two of them now seem to be the two most likely to beat Kepa and Camavinga in the starting XI.

It’s hard to believe but things could get even worse for Barca here.
