Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in his four overs, conceding just 22 runs in the process. He dismissed Abhishek Porel and Prithvi Shaw.
Mumbai: Jasprit Bumrah became second Mumbai Indians bowler and third overall to complete 150 IPL wickets during their win over Delhi Capitals in the ongoing edition on Sunday. He is also the first Indian to reach 150 wickets in the cash-rich league. Former Mumbai Indians pacer and now bowling coach with the same franchise, Lasith Malinga was the first to do so, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Sunil Narine. Coming into the game, with three losses on the trot, the five-time champions needed a win badly to set their campaign back on track. It was also Hardik Pandya first win as Mumbai Indians captain.
Opting to bat first, Mumbai Indians rode on 40-plus knocks from Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan and a 32-run final over from Romario Shepherd to post 234/5 in 20 overs. In reply, Delhi Capitals managed 208/5 in 20 overs despite a whirlwind 71 not out off 24 balls from Tristan Stubbs.
Bumrah also became the third fastest to reach 150 IPL wickets. While the Indian pacer reached his feat in 124 games, Malinga holds the record of achieving the milestone in just 105 games. India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is second on the list having reached the mark in 118 games.
Coming in at the fall of David Warner’s wicket, young Porel joined hands with Prithvi Shaw as both batters switched to power-hitting mode, thereby bashing away the opposition bowlers and stitched up an 88-run stand. However, Bumrah showed his class and made both batters work hard for each run with his precise line and length.
His patience paid off, as he eventually dismissed both batters. A pinpoint yorker brought Shaw’s (66) night to an end, while, a mistimed shot on a full toss led to Porel’s (41) downfall. Bumrah’s spell made Delhi Capitals totter while chasing a herculean total of 235, a feat that has never been achieved at Wankhede Stadium.
The dent caused by Bumrah’s spell took away the elusive chase from DC’s hands, which at one point seemed to be achievable. Tristan Stubbs tried to release pressure with his effortless power hitting but in the end the required run rate proved to be too much for the visitors.
