Meta (formerly Facebook) has implemented measures to block European Union (EU)-based users from accessing the newly-launched Instagram’s Threads app through VPN. This decision came after users complained about being unable to access the app using VPN. Meta confirmed that they are indeed blocking such attempts. Threads app tracks users extensively and collects various personal data, including highly sensitive information like health and financial data. However, this approach poses legal and regulatory challenges for Meta in the EU, as they need a valid legal basis to process such personal data for ad targeting. Despite not being officially rolled out in most of Europe, Meta’s Twitter rival has already surpassed 100 million signups within a few days.
