Cillian Murphy stars as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Tickets for the highly popular blockbuster are being resold on Craigslist at triple their original value. UniversalJason, a 23-year-old reporter in San Francisco, found himself in a predicament recently. He had double-booked his evening, promising his girlfriend he would attend an Alicia Keys concert in Oakland. Meanwhile, he was also eager to see “Oppenheimer” in IMAX format, as it was advertised as the best way to experience the film. However, all screenings were fully booked. Unsure of what to do with his tickets, Jason decided to check what they were going for on Craigslist. To his surprise, the average price was around $100. Jason listed his own tickets for $50 each, nearly quadrupling the price he paid for them. Within minutes, he received several inquiries and his girlfriend helped him field requests from other interested buyers. He eventually sold the tickets within four hours at a negotiated price of $40 each. As of Wednesday morning, there were at least 18 active Craigslist posts in the San Francisco Bay Area from people seeking to either buy or sell “Oppenheimer” tickets. The film has been almost sold out for the next few weeks since its opening weekend, where it debuted with $80.5 million. Some buyers were willing to pay up to $100 for a ticket, while others were offering as much as $150 for a pair. This trend of reselling tickets at a higher rate is not limited to San Francisco. Similar instances have been reported, such as an ad from New York City selling eight tickets for $1,400. The AMC Metreon theater, where the film is being screened, has added more morning showings to meet the high demand but declined to comment on ticket reselling. Director Christopher Nolan has praised the IMAX format, emphasizing the clarity, depth, and immersive experience it provides. Jason still hopes to watch “Oppenheimer” on the big screen and has considered traveling to the only other IMAX theater in the Bay Area, located in Dublin.
