Russia’s defence ministry stated that Ukraine’s attempt to attack the Black Sea port of Sevastopol on Sunday was thwarted, resulting in the destruction of seven aerial and two underwater drones. The ministry conveyed this information on the Telegram messaging app, saying, “This morning, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack by seven unmanned aerial vehicles and two unmanned underwater vehicles on objects on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula near the city of Sevastopol was thwarted.” No casualties or damage were reported. The ministry further explained that two aerial drones were shot down over the Black Sea, far from the coastline, while Russia’s electronic warfare forces intercepted five others. Additionally, two unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) were discovered in the northern part of the Black Sea and subsequently destroyed by fire, according to the ministry.
The Moscow-installed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, shared on the Telegram messaging app that the attacks targeted the harbour of Sevastopol and the city’s Balaklava and Khersones districts. Local transport authorities, backed by Moscow, announced the temporary suspension of maritime transport, including passenger ferries, for a few hours on Sunday. However, Reuters could not independently verify these reports.
There has been no immediate comment from Ukraine regarding the attack on Sevastopol, a port located in the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
It is worth noting that Ukraine rarely claims responsibility for attacks within Russia or on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine. However, in recent months, Ukrainian authorities have emphasized that targeting Russia’s military infrastructure contributes to their counteroffensive efforts against Russia.
