SAG-AFTRA, Union of 160K Actors, Votes in Favor of Hollywood Shutdown: National Strike

Leaders of a Hollywood actors’ union made the decision to go on strike in conjunction with screenwriters, marking the first joint strike in over six decades. The move came after negotiations for a new contract with studios and streaming services fell apart. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, executive director of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists, announced the work stoppage after their contract expired and talks ceased. This is the first strike for actors since 1980 and the first time two major Hollywood unions have gone on strike simultaneously since 1960. The strike was met with chants from picketing screenwriters outside Netflix’s Hollywood offices. The strike has already caused disruptions, including the rescheduling of a film premiere and casting a shadow over the upcoming Emmy Awards. The actors’ union is joining writers on picket lines to negotiate better terms with studios and streaming platforms.
