Samsung has released a new 83-inch S90C OLED TV that appears to be using a panel produced by its rival, LG Display. The TV, priced at $5,399.99, is larger than any of Samsung Display’s QD-OLED panels, indicating the use of LG’s WRGB OLED panel. Samsung’s senior vice president, James Fishler, confirmed that the TV uses WOLED technology but did not disclose the source. It is believed that this collaboration between Samsung and LG is another example of the mutually beneficial relationships that tech rivals can have with each other. While it remains to be seen if using different OLED panels will affect picture quality, there may be slight differences in brightness and color intensity. The verification of panel technology can be done through identification methods such as examining the sub-pixel array or observing the screen color when the TV is turned off. QD-OLED screens, such as those used by LG, differ from traditional OLED panels in their production process, using blue light emitted through quantum dots to eliminate the need for color filters. QD-OLED panels offer brightness gains and maintain vivid quantum dot color reproduction. However, burn-in is still a possibility. Overall, the 83-inch S90C TV offers features expected from Samsung OLEDs, including the Tizen operating system, upscaling technology, Dolby Atmos, HDMI 2.1, and support for game streaming services. It does not support Dolby Vision HDR but instead offers HDR10 Plus.
