Santa Cruz County rollover leaves family, truck overturned in creek

ZAYANTE — After its driver veered off the road Thursday afternoon, a Toyota Tundra ended up on its roof in Lompico Creek with its occupants trapped inside.

Emergency responders were called shortly before 2 p.m. to a rollover crash on Lompico Road, just north of Lower Lake Boulevard. Early reports were that two children were trapped inside the truck.

“It was grandma, transporting a 3- and 4-year-old,” Zayante Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Maxwell said Friday. “(The children) were removed from the vehicle by a bystander, a young gentleman that stopped to render aid. The grandma was able to self-extricate and then he went in and unstrapped the two kids from their car seats.”

While the call initially sounded more dramatic than the outcome, Maxwell said Lompico Creek waters were in its spring runoff and were moving through the truck’s cab.
