It would not be complete conjecture to suggest that the LA Lakers lost to the Miami Heat last night because of Selena Gomez’s choice of metallic heel. It is 2024 and lots of basketball players adore a glamorous shoe, so I imagine seeing those Acne Studios boots courtside might have been a distraction for some members of the team… not to mention Benny Blanco’s floral-printed puffer jacket.
Lest I invoke the wrath of the Selenators – who have already raised their pitchforks at me for having once said that she dresses like a CEO, which I meant as a compliment – I feel obliged to say that this is a joke. I don’t think that Selena Gomez’s presence affected the outcome of last night’s game, I just think that I–a fashion writer–would have been more interested in her outfit than the match itself: those boots, perhaps, but also the $718 Rony Kobo coat and the $20 parachute pants.
Sitting courtside at a major sporting event is, of course, an opportunity for famous people to see and be seen (and occasionally revel in celebrity power couple status), which means fashion is always a consideration. And the aesthetic obligations of the NBA–the MTV of the sports world–are pleasingly liberal. It explains why celebrities like Kim Kardashian will make big “I Love Nerds” and “I own the most expensive Birkin in the world” statements while visiting. As for what Selena was communicating? Perhaps that she likes to sometimes wear metallic shoes?
