Several people treated by paramedics after ‘toxic cloud’ at indoor swimming pool in Prestons

A “toxic cloud” that resulted in the hospitalisation of several adults and children is believed to be the result of the mixing of two chemicals.

Emergency services were called to Swim 2 Me in Prestons, southwest of Sydney, about 4pm on Friday.

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance told 7NEWS.com.au that ten people, including six children, were taken to hospital as a result of the chemical exposure.

They had reported shortness of breath.

Another four people were assessed at the scene by paramedics.

Fire and Rescue NSW specialists also attended the scene and determined that the exposure was created by mixing two common pool chemicals.

“They’ve mixed some hydrochloric acid and some chlorine and that’s given off a reaction,” Superintendent Glen Lord said.

About 30 people were evacuated from the facility which was ventilated before being declared safe just before 5.30pm.

A bucket found in the back of a ute was determined by FRNSW to have been the source of the fuming event.

Police will continue to investigate the incident with the help of WorkCover NSW.
