Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas,’ based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, is a landmark film in both Indian cinema and Shah Rukh Khan’s career. At the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Shah Rukh shared how Bhansali persuaded him to take on the role, despite Khan initially being reluctant, believing he was “too cool” to play Devdas.
SRK revealed on ‘Devdas,’ noting that the story had been remade numerous times and was about an alcoholic who fails to commit to a relationship.He mentioned that, at the time, he could not find the essence in it at his age. Later, after years, filmmaker SLB who was considered as a highly talented filmmaker, approached him with the offer to play Devdas.
Shah Rukh initially said no to playing Devdas, thinking he was “too cool” for the role. However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali told him that his eyes were perfect for the character and that he wouldn’t make the film without him. After a year of not casting anyone else, Khan agreed to take the role.
The superstar mentioned that he didn’t want anyone to look up to Devdas, despite his portrayal of the character. He said he avoids playing roles that demean women and wanted ‘Devdas’ to come across as a spineless person, not someone to be admired.
