Skoda Kylaq it is! Sanskrit-inspired name for Fronx, Venue, Nexon-rivalling SUV

Skoda has finally revealed the name of its upcoming subcompact SUV for the Indian market, set to launch in 2025. The SUV, called the ‘Kylaq,’ continues the brand’s distinct naming strategy, where all SUV names start with ‘K’ and end with ‘Q,’ similar to the Kushaq and Kodiaq models currently available in India. This subcompact SUV will go against the popular models such as Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO and more.

Skoda Kylaq: Name explained

The company has named its upcoming SUV ‘Kylaq’ after a nationwide campaign that invited people to suggest and vote on names. Launched in February 2024, the “Name Your Skoda” campaign attracted over 200,000 entries, with Kylaq emerging as the winning choice. Interestingly, the name is inspired by the Sanskrit word for crystal and Mt. Kailash.

Skoda Kylaq: What to expect

While the company has kept all major details under the wraps so far, it is known that the SUV will be based on the company’s MQB-A0-IN platform which also underpins the Kushaq and the Slavia sedan. The company had previously shared teasers of the Skoda Kylaq, revealing a handful of design elements, including a split headlamp design and LED DRLs. Along with the name announcement, the company has also teased the side profile of the SUV today, featuring roof rails and wraparound tail lamps. Details about the features and interiors are yet to be disclosed.

Skoda Kylaq: Powertrain

We can expect the carmaker to equip the Kylaq with the same power plant as its sibling Kushaq. Therefore, it is likely to get the same 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine that makes 115 hp and 178 Nm of peak torque. It will likely come mated to 6-speed MT or a 6-speed torque converter AT gearbox.
