Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon issued a statement on Monday regarding guard Chennedy Carter’s flagrant foul against Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark during Saturday’s game.
The Hall of Famer and former New York Liberty legend called Carter’s actions against Clark “not appropriate” and added that the 25-year-old will use the situation as a learning experience.
Late in the third quarter during the Fever’s 71-70 win against the Sky, Carter hit a jump shot and pushed the No. 1 overall pick before she could receive an inbounds pass. The play wasn’t reviewed and was originally called a common foul.
The play was later changed to a Flagrant 1 on Sunday following a league review.
Indiana head coach Christie Sides criticized the Association on social media, calling out the perceived inconsistent officiating.
Carter refused to answer questions about the foul after the game. The former first team All-Rookie signed with Chicago in February and has averaged 12.0 points, a career-high 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 18.1 minutes per game across the team’s first seven contests while shooting a career-best 55.4% from the field.
Clark leads the WNBA in minutes played (363), three-point field goal attempts (91) and is second in both three-point field goals (27) and assists (70) but is also first in turnovers (59).
Despite having both Clark and last year’s No. 1 overall pick (Aliyah Boston) in their starting five, the Fever have the second-worst record in the WNBA at 2-9.
