While Mercedes-Benz is fully committed to its lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) under the EQ brand, the luxury carmaker is still producing gas-powered engines for the time being. However, the emphasis has shifted towards downsizing, particularly within its AMG performance division. The days of big, American-sounding V8s and V12s are gone, replaced by smaller engines that utilize turbocharging and hybrid technology to achieve equal or better power levels compared to their gas-guzzling predecessors. Mercedes continues this trend with its new Mercedes-AMG GLC.

2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43
Buyers of this new generation of midsize AMG crossover will have the option to choose between two impressively powerful engines. The base AMG GLCs are powered by AMG’s hand-built M139l 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine alone delivers an impressive 416 horsepower, but an additional 13 HP boost can be obtained through a belt-driven starter generator. Paired with a rear-biased all-wheel drive system and AMG’s nine-speed SpeedShift transmission with a wet start-off clutch, the GLC 43 can reach 60 mph in 4.7 seconds according to Mercedes.
2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63
For those seeking even more power in their GLC, the GLC 63 is available. While it also utilizes the M1391 turbocharged engine found in the GLC 43, it benefits from exclusive hybrid power thanks to a 48-volt generator with start/stop functionality that Mercedes claims is barely noticeable. In addition, the GLC 63 features a 201-HP electric motor on its rear axle. When combined with the turbocharged engine’s 469 HP, the total output is a massive 671 HP and 752 lb-ft of torque. Expect sports car-like performance from the GLC 63, as Mercedes claims it can reach 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 171 mph. The GLC 63 also features a high-performance battery developed in collaboration with Mercedes’ race team, utilizing Formula 1 expertise.

Additional performance features for the AMG GLC models include high-performance braking, speed-sensitive and rear axle steering, customizable drive modes, and various design and customization packages to cater to individual preferences for luxury or sportiness.
While pricing details have not been announced, the Mercedes AMG GLC 43 is expected to arrive at dealerships in early 2024, followed by the GLC 63 in late 2024.
