The number of meningococcal cases in South Australia is over twice as high as it was at the same time last year, leading authorities to urge the public to stay alert and informed about the symptoms of the disease. SA Health has reported 16 cases of invasive meningococcal disease in the state this year, compared to seven cases at this point last year. A 36-year-old man died on July 21, and a 13-year-old girl is in critical condition with the B-strain of the disease, which is also linked to 12 other cases this year. Additionally, one case this year has been identified as the W strain, while another case remains unidentified. All close contacts of the cases have been identified and given clearance antibiotics. Nicole Hammat, whose son died of meningococcal B in December 2021, is warning parents to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease and to act quickly if they suspect meningococcal. She encourages parents to vaccinate their children, educate themselves on the symptoms, and seek medical attention promptly.
