The characters from “The Mandalorian” TV show have already claimed a huge place in the “Star Wars” universe, and their footprint in the galaxy far, far away is about to get even bigger.
This morning, the official “Star Wars” website shared a few scant details about a forthcoming film, which will be based on the hit Disney Plus show and titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” Jon Favreau, who also helmed the show, is set to direct the film. One would assume that Pedro Pascal will star, although his involvement has not been confirmed (Baby Yoda, aka Grogu, is definitely on board though). The film is set to go into production in 2024; however, a release date has not been set. It’s uncertain how the plot of the film — or the timeline of production — will fit in with the rest of the series, which is currently developing a fourth season.
Although the “Star Wars” franchise has been anything but silent in recent years, most of its force has been directed toward television properties. “Andor” proved that a perfect “Star Wars” story doesn’t need to revolve around Jedis, though a few fan-service series built around characters like Boba Fett, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka have been mixed in quality.
The most recently announced “Star Wars” film prior to “The Mandalorian & Grogu” was “Rogue Squadron.” However, after a 2020 unveiling of the title, the film hit scheduling conflicts and is rumored to be canceled. That makes “The Mandalorian & Grogu” the only officially announced “Star Wars” film concept in the works. Again, no release date has been given, though there are currently three untitled “Star Wars” films on Disney’s production schedule, planned for release on May 22, 2026, Dec. 18, 2026, and Dec. 17, 2027.
