State of Origin news, Daly Cherry-Evans booed after game three win

Queensland skipper Daly Chery-Evans has been showered with a cacophony of boos as he gave a speech following the Maroons’ victory over NSW at Cbus Super Stadium.

Queensland won the battle but ultimately lost the war, a thrilling Origin III boilover not enough to undo their series-defining losses in Game one and Game Two.

Despite the Maroons’ woes, a Game Three victory heralded promise for their future and had Paul Green’s troops noticeably up and about at full-time after staving off a series whitewash.

But fans in the stadium either didn’t feel the same or have really long memories, with the Queensland skipper famously reneging on a contract to join the Titans way back in 2015.

Called to the stage to speak on behalf of the Maroons, Cherry-Evans was met with boos from the second his name was spoken over the stadium PA system. And it only got worse when he approached the microphone.

“Well done on NSW on winning this series. Well done lads, you played awesome,” he said as jeers rang out in the crowd.

“I just want to thank the NRL and all the governments for getting these games on, they’ve done fantastic.

“And thank you to all the Queensland fans for the first three games, thanks very much.”

State of Origin Game 3 – Highlights

Cherry-Evans appeared noticeably unimpressed with the scene, owing to how short he kept his speech, a mere 12 seconds.

Fans on social media were quick to point out the boos may have been owing to the Gold Coast crowd’s lingering bitterness towards Cherry-Evans over the contract saga.

Others were just perplexed that Queenslanders would turn so quickly on the skipper who led them to an unlikely series win last year.

And in yet another bizarre twist to the tale, some fans pointed out that it was Cherry-Evans’ conversion kick under pressure that ultimately proved the difference tonight at Robina Stadium, winning the match for Queensland by two points.
