Uluru Dialogue co-chair, Pat Anderson AO, has criticized opposition leader Peter Dutton for his stance on the Indigenous voice, stating that he is “insulting Australians.” Anderson argues that Dutton’s support for a legislated voice to parliament, rather than a constitutionally-protected model, does not bring about the necessary change and goes against the desires expressed in the Uluru statement. She emphasizes that Indigenous consultations leading up to the statement called for a voice enshrined in the constitution, which provides both symbolic and substantive recognition based on their experiences with successive governments. Anderson accuses Dutton of not listening to these calls and of creating his own model that does not align with the needs and wishes of Indigenous communities.
