Hawaii Wildfire: Imported From India, This 150-Year-Old Banyan Tree Struggles For Survival

Considered a major landmark in Lahaina, the banyan tree has provided cooling shade to generations of locals and visitors beneath its massive, sweepy branches and dangling vines, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The banyan tree celebrated its 150th birthday in April this year.

New York: A 150-year-old Banyan tree, imported from India and one of the largest in the US, is struggling to survive as deadly wildfires ravage the Hawaiian island of Maui, causing destruction and claiming the lives of nearly 67 people. Known as “paniana” in Hawaiian, the 46-trunk Banyan tree was a small 8-foot sapling when it was planted in Maui’s Lahaina town in 1873. It stands over 60 feet high and spans the size of an entire city block, making it one of the largest banyan trees in the United States.

According to CNN, the historic town of Lahaina has experienced widespread devastation, including damage to the banyan tree. While the extent of the damage is uncertain, images show that it has been burned but remains standing. Experts believe that the tree has a good chance of recovering if its roots are healthy. Despite the wildfires, the executive director of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation remains optimistic, stating that banyan trees are resilient and difficult to kill.

The banyan tree has long been a major landmark in Lahaina, providing shade and beauty to both locals and visitors. It has 46 major trunks and covers nearly two-thirds of an acre. The health and shape of the tree are maintained by the Maui County Arborist Committee.

The devastating wildfires in Maui have caused significant loss of life, with at least 67 fatalities reported and many people displaced. Efforts are ongoing to contain the fires and provide support to those affected. US President Joe Biden spoke with Hawaii Governor Josh Green to assess the situation and discuss the state’s needs.
