Subaru Reveals Its Bold Vision for Electric Cars

Subaru has announced updated plans for its electrification strategy, revealing that it will offer a total of eight electric vehicles (EVs) by 2028. The carmaker will stick to its previous commitment of introducing four EV models, including the Solterra, by the end of 2026. However, by the end of 2028, Subaru plans to add four more electric models. It remains unclear if the Solterra is included in the eight EVs planned for 2028. Subaru will start EV production in the US from 2027, though it is uncertain if it will utilize its existing relationship with Toyota. In addition to EVs, Subaru will begin production of its “Next-gen HEV” models in Japan from around 2025 and in the US from 2026, using Toyota’s hybrid technology. Subaru aims for EVs and hybrids to make up 50% of its total global sales by 2030. The company also plans to produce over 1.2 million cars annually by 2030, with 600,000 of them being all-electric. Subaru hopes to sell 400,000 EVs in the US by 2028, accounting for half of its total US sales. The Solterra EV, Subaru’s first electric vehicle, has been delayed in Australia to the second half of this year due to supply constraints. The Solterra is expected to come in a dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration, with 160kW of power and 337Nm of torque. It will feature a 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery with a range of 470km in the AWD model according to WLTP figures. The Solterra and Toyota’s bZ4X are based on a shared electric vehicle platform developed by Subaru and Toyota. However, both brands faced challenges with a wheel hub bolt issue that led to a recall campaign and production halt.
