Sunrise Host Matt Shirvington’s Captivating Response to the ‘Deathwish’ Burger: “Why Subject Yourself to This?”

Sunrise host Matt Shirvington has suffered an intense reaction after eating the “hottest burger in Australia” live on-air.

The “Nashville Deathwish” burger is so fiery that Shirvo had to sign a safety waiver and wear gloves, glasses and protective gear before even trying it.

Created by chef Joel Chrystal and the team at Burger Urge, the spicy snack’s key ingredient is the Moruga Scorpion chilli – which is 400 times hotter than the average jalapeno and 500 times hotter than most tabasco sauces.

As Shirvo prepared to bite into the burger, Nat Barr had a 2L bottle of milk on hand for her co-host to drink if the burger was too hot to handle.

“I brought a friend!” she said, presenting the milk to Shirvo.

Going into the challenge, the former Olympian groaned and said he was “not looking forward to this”.

After taking one bite, Shirvo immediately felt the effects.

“Starting to really feel it now, in my throat particularly,” he said.

“Yeah, it’s getting really hot. I can really feel that in my, throat now.”

Not satisfied, Nat suggested Shirvo sample a little more.

“Do you think he should have another bite?” she asked.

It was after Shirvo tried a little more that he really felt the heat.

“Oh, my teeth are starting to go down,” he said.

He then coughed and spluttered, clearly uncomfortable, for close to 30 seconds before drinking milk and feeling some relief.
