Sydney Airport delays: Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin flights cancelled as wild weather forces runway closure

More than 140 flights have been cancelled in and out of Sydney Airport as strong winds cause significant disruptions.

High winds caused the airport to enact a “single runway operation” on Thursday morning.

“This decision is purely weather and safety-related to safeguard the travelling public,” an Airservices Australia spokesperson told 7NEWS.

More than 70 domestic flights at the airport have been cancelled, with over 20 of those before midday.

Another 72 flights into Sydney were cancelled.

Multiple airlines are impacted, including Qantas and Jetstar.

A single runway was still in place as of 6pm but is expected to be lifted within hours.

“They cancelled our flight at 4am in the morning and we did not even see it,” a frustrated traveller told 7NEWS.

“Honestly, it’s so ridiculous, I’m not even angry anymore,” another said.

Travellers are urged to contact their airlines for further details on flight scheduling and cancellations.

Alternatively, the Sydney Airport website has a list of current delays and cancellations.

Winds of up to 60 km/h were forecast for Thursday, with gusts at the airport reaching 61km/h shortly after 12pm.
