Sydney fire at Port Botany industrial site startles residents as smoke is seen from kilometres away
Sydney residents have been left startled after a fire blew black smoke hundreds of metres into the sky over the city.
The blaze, which occurred at an industrial site in Port Botany, could be seen from kilometres away on Wednesday morning.
Concerned Sydneysiders took to social media to raise the alarm.
“Seeing a fire somewhere in the Sydney city fringe right now- I hope everyone is OK,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“Fire with visible flames somewhere south of Sydney city,” another said.
Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed the fire was caused by excess gas being burnt off through a stack.
“An industrial site has activated its safety systems,” firefighters said.
“Excess gas is being burnt off through a stack, creating a large flame and black smoke which may be visible for some distance.
“(Fire and Rescue NSW) is aware of the situation.”
One witness said the fire was burning into the sky for 20 minutes before stopping.
“Almost like it was just turned off – no hoses or anything, just like a candle went down over a minute,” the witness wrote on Twitter.
The fire has been controlled.
