But SZA hasn’t forgotten. And after witnessing the R&B artist’s powerhouse performance on Thursday, her San Francisco crowd isn’t likely to forget anytime soon either. SZA performs at the Chase Center in San Francisco on October 26, 2023.Chase Center/Skyler GreeneThe energy was as high as I’ve ever seen it for a Chase Center performance in the lead up to SZA’s entrance. Noise from the crowd, which skewed heavily Gen Z, was deafening even before the headliner arrived, with strangers taking selfies together and people twerking in the aisles to raucous cheers.AdvertisementArticle continues below this adAfter the house lights dimmed, SZA appeared suspended on a ledge with an ocean scene behind her, mimicking the cover art for the tour’s namesake album. The rest of the show was almost entirely ocean-themed, with the high-tech set transforming from one aquatic element to another.Early on, SZA paid homage to the diversity of her Northern California fans “San Francisco!” she shouted to roars from the crowd. “And the Bay Area! And Oakland! I  respect the difference.”SZA performs at the Chase Center in San Francisco on October 26, 2023.Chase Center/Skyler GreeneAdvertisementArticle continues below this adIt was apt for her to call out the East Bay city because her first set could easily have been based on the Port of Oakland. With container cranes and a gentle tide behind her, SZA performed her first run of songs which included “Notice Me” and “Love Galore,” for which SZA rapped Travis Scott’s verse. As the scene around her transformed, SZA next performed in what appeared to be the hull of a ship. SZA singing “Shirt” as bioluminescent fish danced around her highlighted the second act.  SZA performs at the Chase Center in San Francisco on October 26, 2023.Chase Center/Skyler GreeneFrom there, the audience was treated to a behind-the-scenes experience. Cameras followed the singer backstage, first from SZA’s own POV and then filming her as stagehands began assisting with a costume change. At that point, the singer broke into “Smoking on my Ex Pack,” a track on which SZA raps as well as sings. Rapping live is hard enough without multiple people adjusting straps and messing with tech: It added yet another element to the endurance test that was SZA’s nearly two-hour long show.AdvertisementArticle continues below this adThe moment turned out to be a masterful piece of misdirection because when the singer came back out, a life-size tug boat had appeared onstage,  assembled while fans were busy watching the star’s costume change. As the crowd gasped at yet another Broadway-worthy set design, the singer broke into “All The Stars,” her first mega-hit from the “Black Panther” soundtrack which vaulted her into the mainstream and earned her an Academy Award nomination. The showmanship wasn’t done yet. To cries of astonishment, SZA climbed onto a liferaft, suspended in midair. Flying above the audience, the singer performed three of her bigger hits, “Special,” “Gone Girl,” and “Nobody Gets Me,” which she dedicated to her “trash ass ex-fiance.”(An attempt to discover who this fiance was led me to perhaps the greatest internet rumor of all time, that SZA and Bill Nye the Science Guy were once in a clandestine relationship.)AdvertisementArticle continues below this adAs the performance moved into its final phase, the set took another drastic change. SZA performed “Kill Bill” with a desert landscape appearing behind her. Even Death Valley was once an ocean.A full evolution had taken place at the SOS Tour, and no one left wanting to be rescued.
