Tata Motors overtakes Hyundai in Nov ’23 as auto industry records highest ever sales

The Indian automobile industry created history in November 2023 after a collective sale of 28.54 lakh vehicles in the month, surpassing the previous high of March 2020, which witnessed a sale of 25.69 lakh vehicles during the onset of BS6 emission norms. While Maruti Suzuki retained its position as the top-selling car manufacturer in the country last month, Tata Motors was able to overtake Hyundai to take the second spot.
The homegrown manufacturer sold 53,539 passenger vehicles in India in November 2023, helping it secure a market share of 14.85%. In contrast, Hyundai Motor India sold 49,716 units, ending the month with a market share of 13.79%. Mahindra & Mahindra occupied the fourth spot with 38,933 passenger vehicles sold in the month for a 10.80% market share. Korean carmaker Kia sits on fifth with a sale of 19,885 units and a 5.52% market share, while Toyota emerged as the sixth top-selling carmaker with 16,567 units sold for a 4.60% market share. Skoda Auto Volkswagen Group, MG Motor and Renault rounded up the top 10.
The Indian two-wheeler market also recorded its highest ever sales in the same month with a total sale of 22.47 lakh units, registering a massive month-on-month growth of 49%! The festive season and the launch of new models are considered to be behind the growth in sales numbers. However, FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India) warns that a dip in vehicle sales might be on its way considering various factors including an anticipated inflation.
