Terry White and wife Rhonda announce retirement from pharmacy business after 65 years

Terry White and his wife Rhonda have walked away from the successful pharmacy business they set up in Queensland 65 years ago.

The celebrated couple are being lauded as “true pioneers” of Australian pharmacy after they announced their retirement and intention to sell off their remaining stake in the business.

Known as TerryWhite Chemmart since a merger in 2016, White set up his first pharmacy in Redcliffe in 1958, while Rhonda opened her own nearby, soon after they married in 1961.

In 1994, they set up the Terry White Chemists franchising company, which had about 230 stores before the merger with Chemmart turned the business into a 550-store behemoth. The brand has been owned by EBOS Group since 2018.

“The TerryWhite Chemmart journey has always been about more than just running pharmacies. It’s been about pioneering new ideas and embracing change to better serve communities across Australia,” White said in a statement.

“Our legacy is a testament to the power of innovation and compassion in healthcare.”

Rhonda White said the couple has “strived to make a difference in their lives and empower them to take charge of their health, their careers and their businesses”.

Despite the couple’s withdrawal from the business, Terry White’s name is expected to remain in the business’s branding as a trusted figure of pharmacy.

EBOS chief executive John Cullity described them as “true pioneers in the Australian pharmacy market”.

“Their legacy of innovation and unwavering commitment to healthcare excellence has not only shaped an industry, but has positively impacted countless lives across the nation,” he said.

“Their vision, dedication, and the creation of TerryWhite Chemmart have left an indelible mark, and we are proud to continue carrying their torch forward.

“Their retirement marks the end of an era, but their enduring legacy will forever inspire us all.”
