The architect behind Josh Parr’s $10 million Golden Eagle triumph

Star jockey Josh Parr has had a week to remember, taking out the $10 million Golden Eagle last Saturday with Obamburumai.

Parr, who has already clinched nine Group 1 victories, labelled the triumph as a career-defining moment when speaking exclusively to 7Horse Racing this week.

“Spring has come alive so to speak for me with the Golden Eagle win,” Parr said.

“It’s the second-richest turf race we have, so winning it was quite a thrilling experience. It’s a nice addition to the resume.”

This week, 7Horse Racing sat down with Parr and his riding manager, Tye Angland, to delve into the behind-the-scenes dynamics that contributed to the jockey’s recent success on the track.

Angland, a former Group 1 winning jockey was forced to retire in 2018 due to a fall in Hong Kong which left him as a paraplegic, now manages Parr’s riding engagements.

The pair’s connection dates back to their apprenticeship days in 2006 and 2007 when they, along with Tim Clark (who Angland also manages) competed fiercely for the apprentices’ title.

“We’ve been pretty close ever since,” Angland shared.

“The way I manage is if I was still riding. I don’t take too many light rides, I don’t take rides too early that I don’t think will be overly competitive. I manage the way I probably would’ve liked to be managed. I found the groove pretty quick.”

Parr expressed gratitude for Angland’s management style in the interview, noting the genuine excitement Angland shares in his victories, including last Saturday’s Golden Eagle.

“To come back and Tye to be there and to see the smile on his face, he could feel the excitement with me. It was a really nice moment,” Parr reflected.

Currently managing a select group of riders, including Clark and James Innes Jnr, Angland emphasised the importance of quality over quantity.

“I don’t want to expand too big where I’m not working as hard as I am for my main riders,” Angland said.

“It’s a small boutique, little stable, and I’m happy with what I’ve got for the moment.”
