Negative Supply has announced the Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2, a significant upgrade over the company’s original Basic Film Carrier 35.
The Basic Film Carrier MK2 uses many shared parts and manufacturing processes with Negative Supply’s Pro Film Carrier 35, all at an entry-level price point of $79.
With support for all 35mm formats, including half frame, full frame (standard 35mm), and panoramic sizes in a single capture, the Basic Film Carrier MK2 promises to “reshape the landscape of 35mm film scanning.”
The Basic Film Carrier MK2 also includes the same mask set as the Pro Film Carrier 35, which Negative Supply says will ensure that scanning the first and last frames on strips and rolls will be “more effective than ever.”
Like the Pro Film Carrier 35, the Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2 works with Negative Supply’s interchangeable film cassettes. As of now, Negative Supply has launched five film cassettes. The Standard Border 35mm Cassette, which ships with the new carrier by default, supports half, standard, and panoramic frames. The Full Border 35mm Cassette “shows fuller borders,” and includes interchangeable masks for half, standard, and pano frames.
The APS Film Scanning Cassette replaces a previous-generation cassette and promises superior film flatness. The 110 Film Scanning Cassette allows film photographers to scan 110-format film. Due to customer requests, Negative Supply has announced the new 126 Film Scanning Cassette, further expanding the versatility of its Pro Film Carrier 35 and the new Basic Film Carrier MK2.
How to Use the Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2
Like its predecessor, the Negative Supply Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2 allows photographers to scan film using a carrier, stand, light, and digital camera. “Many modern digital cameras, from entry-level to professional, will allow you to make beautiful film scans with this device,” says Negative Supply.
Once set up, users can scan full rolls of 35mm film in two minutes or less. The video below features the original Basic Film Carrier 35, but the general workflow remains the same with the new version.
Users should achieve even better results with the Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2 thanks to improved materials quality and compatibility with Negative Supply’s Pro Film Carrier 35 cassettes.
