The SF Giants’ attempt to ring in the new year went horribly wrong

The ballclub’s account on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted a simple, and likely scheduled, “Happy New Year” graphic with the caption “Happy New Year, #SFGiants fans!” Rather than returning the favor, some fans replied with demands of the organization.

“New year. Same BS offseason…” wrote one user, three minutes into 2024.

“Happy new year #fireFarhan and bring in someone who will win games,” wrote another, who waited 11 minutes to call for the job of Farhan Zaidi, president of baseball operations.

“Here’s to another year of mediocre baseball in SF. Thanks Farhan!” wrote another user, who waited until at least the following morning for their reply.

It was a rather consistent sentiment across the team’s posts on Twitter. Even on a New Year’s Eve post where a person in Giants staff gear was dancing on the Oracle Park grass — captioned “That one dude on the dance floor in 12 hours” — the top reply was “This ain’t funny. Do something.”

Frustrated sports fans are nothing new, but that reply in particular is indicative of the source of all this annoyance. Giants fans, and the team itself, expected to bring in major free agents this offseason to turn around what’s been nothing but consistent mediocrity since 2017 (with one obvious exception). Even if they never really had a shot at signing Shohei Ohtani, or Yoshinobu Yamamoto, this offseason, the club still reportedly pushed hard for those players and fell short, adding two more examples of the team missing out on big-name talent. The fact that the team has also only brought in one proper free agent this winter, Jung-hoo Lee, hasn’t helped either, with solid talent still available.

There was no better sign of this frustration than on the latest Giants post posted Tuesday morning, which was a simple, light-hearted video of someone running around scenic Oracle Park. A top reply suggested another way the team could have done that post: “Show me Farhan running himself out of the organization.”
