Apple has listed all first-generation Apple Watch models, including the $17,000 solid-gold Edition, as “obsolete.” All first-gen Apple Watch models released in 2015 were added to the list of obsolete products on September 30, according to a report by MacRumors.
Now, these “Series 0” watches are no longer eligible for repairs or services at Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Provider locations. If you own one, you might have a tough time finding its spare parts too, as Apple won’t no longer provide parts.
The software support ended in 2018, with the watchOS 4.3.2 being the last update shipped to the first-gen watches.
The list of discontinued models includes all versions of the original Apple Watch in both 38mm and 42mm sizes made of aluminium and stainless steel, including Hermès variants, which are now considered obsolete.
The 18-karat gold casing, which was available for up to $17,000 in the US is also now obsolete. When it was released, it was seen on the wrists of influential celebrities. There also was a gold link bracelet that was never made available to the public. This was Apple’s first attempt at competing with the luxury watch market. However, the solid-gold version was discontinued after only a year in favour of comparably less expensive ceramic and titanium versions.
When Apple stops distributing a product for more than seven years, it becomes technologically obsolete according to Apple’s classification. The first-generation Apple Watch was discontinued in September 2016, and since it’s been seven years, the first-ever Apple Watch is now considered obsolete.
In 2015, Apple launched the Apple Watch, positioning it as the company’s “most personal device ever.” The watch boasted a Retina display with Force Touch and a Taptic Engine. It included 11 watch faces, as well as an Activity app and a Workout app, making it easy to track your daily activity and metrics during workouts.
