India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for manufacturing IT hardware has got a new boost. A recently approved beneficiary of the government, Noida-based Sahasra Group, has booked its first order to manufacture laptops for French electronics brand Thomson. As per a recent deal, the company is set to enter the IT hardware market in India by launching made-in-India laptops and tablets to be manufactured by Sahasra. These laptops will be both budget-friendly and easily available.
Thomson laptops in India: Price and availability
According to a report by the Economic Times, Thomson is targeting mainly the entry-level segment in India. The company’s global general manager, Pierre Krasnovsky, said that it is planning to offer Windows 11-run laptops priced below Rs 19,990.
These laptops will be available both online (on Amazon and Flipkart) as well as offline in retail stores (like Croma and Vijay Sales) starting January 2024.
Thomson has also conducted proof-of-concept with primary schools in UP and some other state governments. The company will propose Thomson laptops for educational purposes. The devices will also be listed at the government e-marketplace (GeM) portal for public procurement, the report said.
In a statement, Varun Manwani, CEO of Sahasra Group, said: “We are targeting production of 100,000 units in the first year to meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria. Initial cost disabilities will be offset by the PLI benefits, while further savings will come as more supply chain vendors set up base in India over the years.”
Sahasra has plans to invest Rs 250 crore capital over the next six years. Manwani said that the manufacturer has already deployed Rs 50 crore for the construction of a new manufacturing plant in Bhiwadi, UP.
Over the next five years, the manufacturer, which is also known for supplying the first made-in-India semiconductors, is also likely to generate 700-1000 jobs.
Thomson CEO Krasnovsky is also confident about the competition these laptops will face from Google’s Chromebook and Reliance’s JioBook in the affordable segment.
He said: “Laptops are perceived as more convenient than Chromebooks from a consumer standpoint, primarily because Microsoft Windows is more familiar in the context of laptops as a product.”
“We are the only brand which is offering Intel processor-powered devices, bringing the Windows 11 interface at below Rs 19K price point with 12 hours of battery life. In fact, we have been awarded for creating the lightest laptop weighing 900gms at IFA, in Berlin,” added Avinash Singh, country manager of Thomson India.
