Sanjay Dutt, a prominent actor in Bollywood, is celebrating his 65th birthday today. The actor, numerous times has openly shared his tumultuous journey with drug addiction, describing it as “nine years of hell.” Dutt’s foray into drugs began during his college years, a time when experimenting with substances was perceived as a part of the youth culture.
In a past interview with Simi Garewal, the Rocky actor had recalled, “It was just the ‘in’ thing at that time. Somebody just said try it and that was it.” This seemingly innocent initiation spiraled into a decade-long struggle with various drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and LSD. Dutt admitted to trying “every drug in the book,” which ultimately led to severe consequences for his mental and physical health.
Dutt’s addiction was not just a phase; it consumed him. He recounted a harrowing experience while under the influence of LSD, where he hallucinated during a meeting with his father, Sunil Dutt. At the India Today Conclave 2016, the actor revealed he was called to his father Sunil Dutt‘s office. “I went there and by the time I reached there, he is sitting in front of me and it’s kind of hit me. I don’t even know what he was talking, he was talking in slow motion and I’m trying to say, ‘ji, ji’. I saw a wick come out from his head and it lit up, like a candle. I saw him melting like a candle. And I jumped on him, trying to put his face together and that wick off,” he said.
The turning point came when he woke up after a two-day drug binge, feeling disoriented and hungry. His servant’s tears upon seeing him revealed the extent of concern from those around him. “You have woken up after two days. The house has gone crazy, people are worried,” the servant said, prompting Dutt to confront the reality of his situation. Looking in the mirror, he saw the toll drugs had taken on him—puffy and unrecognizable. This moment of clarity led him to seek help from his father, marking the beginning of his recovery journey.
Sanjay Dutt was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital for three weeks, followed by a rehabilitation stint in the United States. This period was crucial for his recovery, allowing him to detox and regain control over his life. Upon returning to India, he faced a significant challenge: his drug dealer was waiting for him, offering new substances. In that pivotal moment, Dutt chose to reject the offer, a decision he credits with solidifying his victory over addiction. “That day I knew that I had won the battle,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of that choice in his recovery.
Having overcome his addiction, Sanjay Dutt has spent over four decades sober. He often reflects on the emptiness of his drug-fueled years, stating, “It’s no fun actually. It’s the worst thing, because there’s nothing like getting a high from life.” He now advocates for the adrenaline rush from living a fulfilling life, engaging in work, and pursuing fitness over artificial highs from drugs.
Sanjay Dutt’s battle with drug addiction is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Dutt has become a symbol of hope for many, proving that recovery is possible, and that life can be lived fully and joyfully without the crutch of drugs.
On the work front Sanjay Dutt is gearing up for his upcoming film Ghudchadi alongside Raveena Tandon, Khushalii Kumar, Parth Samthaan and Aruna Irani.
