The National Weather Service is warning of the possibility of severe thunderstorms Sunday in Michigan.
The weather service’s Detroit office said there is a “marginal risk” of severe thunderstorms in the early morning and then again from mid-afternoon to mid-evening, and the primary hazards are wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail one inch or greater in size.
Heavy rainfall and localized flooding are also possible, the weather service said.
Consumers Energy said it is preparing company and contract crews from Michigan and 13 states to respond to possible power outages.
“Even as we’ve just finished responding to flooding and other severe weather this week, it’s important to know we are not letting our guard down,” said Chris Laird, Consumers Energy’s vice president for electric operations, in a press release. “We will be sure we’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings this weekend.”
Consumers Energy’s Storm Restoration Team is monitoring the forecast and mobile storm units stocked with supplies will be moved into place as the storm’s path and impact become clearer, helping to speed up power restoration, the utility said.
Laird encouraged Michigan resident to prepare for the possibility of severe weather. Some tips include:
Charge all electronic devices, have an emergency battery or charging station available during an outage. Battery-operated radios are recommended.
Prepare an emergency kit that includes flashlights and extra batteries, water, nonperishable food and blankets. Include enough medication, baby supplies and pet food if applicable.
Unplug sensitive electronics like TVs, computers and printers. Turn off power strips.
