Rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, has been sentenced to 10 years after being found guilty in December of shooting and injuring rapper Megan Thee Stallion. A Los Angeles jury convicted Lanez of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Lanez pleaded not guilty, but his former attorney mentioned the possibility of an appeal. Lanez’s current attorneys may also appeal the conviction. Despite facing a maximum sentence of 22 years, prosecutors sought a 13-year sentence. Lanez’s attorneys submitted a memo requesting probation and drug rehabilitation for their client before the sentencing. During the trial, Lanez attempted to appeal to Black men by criticizing cancel culture and using misogynoir against Megan Thee Stallion. Megan initially told police she had stepped on glass and didn’t immediately reveal the truth due to fear during a time of heightened police brutality. Lanez’s defense attorney tried to shift blame onto Megan’s friend and claimed Lanez was not responsible for shooting her. However, Megan’s testimony, messages and calls from Lanez apologizing after the incident, and a pretrial interview from her friend contradicted these claims. Following the guilty verdict, Lanez’s family expressed their displeasure, while Megan referred to it as a victory for women who have been shamed and blamed for violent crimes committed against them.
