Toyota Expanding its MPV Lineup with the Launch of Rumion

Toyota unveiled its most affordable multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in India, aiming to bolster its presence in the rapidly growing MPV segment, where it already holds a 30% market share. The Toyota Rumion, based on Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga, allows the Japanese automaker to enter the compact MPV segment that recorded 325,000 vehicle sales last year. In India, Toyota operates through a joint venture called Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) with Kirloskar Group.

Atul Sood, Vice President (Sales and Strategic Marketing) at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, stated that there is a robust demand for utility vehicles in the Indian market, with the compact MPV segment growing by 22% last year. The Rumion is aimed at businesspersons who require a vehicle for daily commuting as well as family travel on weekends. Toyota’s MPV offerings in India include popular models such as Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross, priced above ₹20 lakh, along with the premium Toyota Vellfire.

Toyota also plans to introduce electrified vehicles in the Indian market, in collaboration with Suzuki, to bolster sustainable sales volumes. The company intends to evaluate the feasibility of introducing pure electric vehicles once renewable energy accounts for a larger portion of the energy mix and charging infrastructure for EVs becomes more widespread across the country.
