Toyota to invest Rs 3,300 Cr for new plant in Karnataka: 1 lakh capacity with Innova Hycross production

Toyota KirloskarMotor (TKM) has announced that it will soon invest Rs 3,300 crore to set up its third plant in Bidadi district, near Karnataka’s Bengaluru. The new plant will ramp up Toyota’s production capacity by 1 lakh units annually. The automaker currently has a production capacity of 3.42 lakh cars and this number would grow to 4.42 lakh after the inauguration of the new plant.The investment is aimed at building up on TKM’s 25 year journey in India and further strengthening its commitment towards ‘Make-in-India’. The new plant would also generate additional employment for an estimated 2,000 workers. TKM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka government to further enhance its operation with the freshly planned investments.

The plant is expected to be operational by 2026 and a direct impact would be on Toyota customers who are looking to buy its popular models such as the Innova Hycross hybrid MPV. Once the plant is operational, the over 12 month waiting periods on models such as the Hycross and Hyryder are expected to come down, thanks to the added production capacity. That said, with nearly 3 years to go for the new plant’s opening, Toyota buyers might continue to experience long waiting periods for some time.
Since its arrival in India, the automaker has invested over Rs 16,000 crore and generated approximately 88,000 jobs across the value chain, including suppliers and dealer partners. Moreover, Toyota’s cumulative export contributions till date amount to an estimated Rs 30,000 crore. Overall, the company has sold over 2.3 million cars in the country from the Qualis, Corolla to the all-new Hycross, Rumion and more.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Masakazu Yoshimura, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “As a future ready mobility company, we are certain that today’s significant MoU with the State Govt of Karnataka for the new plant will positively contribute through consequent employment generation and expand adoption of advanced clean technologies. We will continue to work together with the government to develop a world-class local ecosystem that promotes the best solutions for india by focusing on improving energy security, promoting economic growth and achieving carbon neutrality.
