LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – As millions head home from the holiday weekend, the winter weather has slowed many down.
Drivers passing through Lincoln said they’ve seen a lot of crashes on their way down Interstate 80.
Israel Reyes, said he’s been driving a semi-truck since 2020. He said it can be dangerous when people aren’t prepared and don’t take weather seriously.
“If you don’t have to be out there, just stay home,” he said. “There are still some vehicles in the ditch, they’re pulling them out. I’d say more around town is more of the problem areas.”
Reyes said he often drives from Hastings to Minnesota and will spend a few days at a time on the road.
He said trucks carrying a heavy load have a harder time stopping and need extra space.
“A lot of cars, little cars, they pull out in front of us and we can’t just stop on a dime,” Reyes said. “If you see us coming, if you could wait a few seconds, just let us pass by. It saves lives. We don’t want anyone to be missed this year or next year.”
AAA Nebraska said if you plan to travel over the next few days you should spend some time preparing.
First, plan out a route and build in extra time for delays.
Next you should pack an emergency kit, complete with first aid, blankets and food in case you get stranded.
General maintenance checks of your battery, tire pressure and gas tank are also important before you get behind the wheel.
