OAKLAND – Two people died and two others were wounded in an East Oakland shooting on Saturday morning, authorities said.
The shooting happened just after 9 a.m. outside an apartment complex in the 1600 block of 83rd Avenue, not far from International Boulevard.
A man and woman were found dead by police outside the complex. Two other women were wounded and taken to hospitals. Their conditions were not known.
Authorities believe there was one shooter and as of 1 p.m. that person was not in custody.
Police cordoned off the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Holly Street in Oakland while the on-site investigation proceeded.
“We were inside when we heard the gunshots — bang bang bang,” said Rodrigo Argueta, who lives near the corner of 83rd Avenue and Holly Street. “I heard four gunshots, and then they stopped. Then four more gunshots.”
He said the gunfire sounded extremely close to the house where he has lived with his wife for 33 years.
“When we heard the gunshots we didn’t know what to do. We didn’t know if we had to get down on the floor,” said his wife, Maria Argueta.
The killings are the 58th and 59th homicides investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time, OPD had investigated 67 homicides.
A $30,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the shooter. Police say tipsters can contact them at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950.
