NEW DELHI: In a shocking turn of events, a clash broke out between cadets of two groups at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Golaghat district of Assam, leaving at least seven Manipur Police trainees injured.
The confrontation ignited when two trainees engaged in a heated verbal exchange after one of them was found bringing liquor from a local market into the academy premises during dinner time on Saturday night.The dispute quickly escalated into a full-blown clash, resulting in injuries to several trainees, as confirmed by a senior official from the academy.
“Seven trainees from Manipur sustained injuries during the scuffle. Three of the injured were subsequently transferred to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for further treatment, while four were discharged after receiving preliminary medical attention at the local hospital,” the official said.
Assam Police DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh addressed the incident, highlighting that the clash involved young trainees from Manipur. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the institute’s instructions, protocols, and disciplinary measures.
“The trainees have been instructed unequivocally to follow the principles guiding training in our Academy. Any deviation will be corrected through rigorous training measures,” Singh asserted.
The DGP also clarified that the altercation originated from a dispute over the distribution of dinner, stating that the matter has now been resolved. Pictures shared by Singh showed the trainees sitting on the ground in the presence of Assam Police personnel.
To assess the situation, Manipur Police has deputed a senior IPS officer, M Pradip Singh, to Dergaon. Manipur Police assured the public that the situation is under control and being monitored in real-time.
“A senior officer from Manipur Police, M Pradip Singh, IPS, is being deputed tomorrow to Dergaon to take stock of the situation. The matter is being monitored by Manipur Police on a real-time basis, and the situation is under control,” a statement from Manipur Police read.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges and responsibilities associated with police training, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to discipline and decorum within training institutes.
