A nurse was stabbed in the UK on Tuesday by an agitated hospital visitor who was allegedly angry about visiting restrictions due to COVID.

Critical care nurse Joanne Kelly, 47, was taken into theatre for surgery after the incident outside the emergency department of New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, The Sun reports.

“Apparently she was stopped by a man who was questioning her about COVID restrictions and visiting hours,” a source told the publication.

“He was agitated and she was trying to calm him down.

“Then she was stabbed. Security guards detained him quickly.”

Restrictions on visiting hours had been introduced in recent weeks due to a spike in COVID-related hospital admissions.

A niece said Kelly was “doing ok” and was in “good condition.”

Her injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

“There has been a police incident at New Cross Hospital,” the statement read.

“Police were on site and we increased security presence.

“There was no disruption to services.”

A West Midlands police spokesperson said a 21-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of wounding.

The alleged assault comes just 12 days after a man was jailed for nine years for stabbing two paramedics who had attended his Wolverhampton home.

The paramedics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service had gone to visit 53-year-old Martyn Smith when he allegedly lunged at them with two kitchen knives.

“For two paramedics to be stabbed so horrifically whilst simply trying to help a patient is sickening,” West Midlands Ambulance Service chief executive Anthony Marsh said.
