UK Premiere of “Oppenheimer” Sees Cast Depart Prior to SAG Strike

The cast of Oppenheimer, including Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh, were seen leaving their own London premiere in support of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) as they joined the writers on strike. The highly anticipated war drama Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer’s involvement in the development of the atomic bomb. The stars of the film walked out of the event to write their picket signs, according to Nolan. At the screening, Nolan acknowledged the work of the cast members and expressed his support for the union and their struggle for fair wages. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May. Blunt expressed her hopes for a fair deal and mentioned that if a strike were called, the cast would leave together in unity. SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher announced that the union will be going on strike. Oppenheimer is set to be released in cinemas on July 21. In other news, Blunt has announced that she will be taking a break from acting to focus on her role as a mother.
