The Ukraine‘s top military commander said that his troops have established control over an area spanning 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) within Russia‘s Kursk region, which shares a border with Ukraine, in a video published on Monday.
“We continue to conduct offensive operations in the Kursk region. As of now, about 1,000 square kilometres of the territory of the Russian Federation are under our control,” General Oleksandr Syrskyi said in the video published on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy‘s social media.
“The troops are fulfilling their tasks. Fighting continues actually along the entire front line. The situation is under our control,” he added.
Syrskyi also briefed the president on the front-line situation. Zelenskyy acknowledged the presence of Ukrainian forces within the Kursk region for the first time.
In a statement released on Telegram, he praised the Ukraine’s military personnel, “for their steadfastness and decisive actions.”
According to Alexei Smirnov, the acting governor of Russia’s Kursk region, Ukrainian forces have taken control of 28 settlements, with the incursion extending approximately 12 km in depth and 40 km in width.
Zelenskyy stated that the defence ministry and diplomatic corps have been instructed to compile a list of “necessary actions” required to obtain approval from Ukraine’s Western allies for the use of long-range weapons to conduct strikes within Russian territory.
Zelenskyy said that the area now under Ukrainian control had been repeatedly utilized to launch attacks against Ukraine’s Sumy region, adding that it is “absolutely fair to destroy Russian terrorists where they are”, AP reported.
“Russia brought war to others. Now it is coming home,” Zelenskyy said.
