Home Health: Conjunctivitis Cases in Delhi-NCR – How Serious is Pink Eye? Know the Signs, Symptoms, and Preventive Measures
Conjunctivitis is a common eye ailment that becomes more prevalent during the monsoon season in Delhi-NCR due to factors such as increased humidity, tainted water, and the presence of allergens.
The number of conjunctivitis cases in Delhi-NCR is rising alarmingly nationwide. This common eye illness is becoming more widespread due to constant rain, humidity, and waterlogging, which create the perfect conditions for the growth of bacteria and viruses. Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye or the eye flu, can cause red, itchy eyes with a sticky discharge.
So, what exactly is conjunctivitis? Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, occurs when the translucent membrane called the conjunctiva, which covers the white portion of the eyeball, becomes infected or swollen. The most common cause of conjunctivitis is an adenovirus infection, which is also responsible for the common cold and other upper respiratory illnesses.
Conjunctivitis spreads through direct or indirect contact with the fluid from an infected person’s eye. Bacteria and viruses can spread from one person’s hands to another, especially through touching or shaking hands, and can then enter the eye. It is also possible to contract conjunctivitis by touching objects or surfaces that are infected with germs or viruses and then touching your eyes.
The symptoms of conjunctivitis include red and itchy eyes, tearing, a sensation of discomfort in one or both eyes, photophobia (aversion to light), and the development of crust in one or both eyes overnight, making it difficult to open the eyes in the morning.
To prevent the spread of conjunctivitis, it is important to wash your hands frequently with soap and water and avoid touching your eyes with unclean hands. Taking regular showers is also beneficial. It is advisable to avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can worsen the infection. Instead, use a fresh tissue or handkerchief to remove any discharge. If you wear eye makeup, it is best to avoid using it during the infection, and if you do, make sure to clean your brushes and supplies frequently. Changing your bedding and towels regularly and washing them in hot water with detergent can help eliminate any bacteria. If your symptoms worsen or persist despite using over-the-counter treatments, it is important to consult an ophthalmologist or eye professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
