Unveiling the Impact of Heat on Humans: A Robot That Sweats, Breathes, and Walks

Developed by a team at Arizona State University (ASU), the robot known as ANDI is the first of its kind to mimic the thermal functions of the human body. ANDI has 35 individually controlled surface areas equipped with temperature sensors, heat flux sensors, and sweat-producing pores. It was placed in a heat chamber to study the human body’s response to extreme heat. The purpose of this robotic creation is to help researchers gain a better understanding of how heat stress affects the human body. ANDI is capable of sweating, generating heat, shivering, walking, and breathing. It is one of only two thermal manikins used by research institutions and the first to be used outdoors. Currently, there are ten ANDI manikins worldwide, mainly used by athletic clothing companies for garment testing. The research conducted with ANDI is particularly relevant as the United States is currently facing deadly heatwaves, and it is predicted that higher temperatures and more intense heatwaves will occur in the future. Inside ANDI’s heat chamber, researchers are able to simulate heat-exposure scenarios from various locations around the world. The chamber, known as the “Warm Room,” is equipped with advanced technologies that control wind, temperature (up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit), and solar radiation. ANDI also includes internal cooling channels that circulate cool water throughout its body to withstand extreme heat while measuring various variables that contribute to our perception of heat in different environments. Researchers at ASU can customize thermal regulation models based on different body types, health characteristics, age, and medical conditions. This customization allows for a more accurate understanding of how individuals with different characteristics respond to heat. The data collected from ANDI’s experiments aims to inform the design of interventions such as cooling clothing or backpack exoskeletons that provide cooling support. The goal is to develop effective solutions to mitigate the impact of heat stress on humans.
