Spain’s conservative Popular Party is projected to win the national election but without a majority to overthrow the coalition government led by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The Popular Party is on track to secure 136 seats out of 350 in the Congress of Deputies, while the Socialist Party is expected to take 122 seats. Although the Socialists can enlist the support of the left-wing Sumar alliance and smaller parties, neither side may be able to secure a majority. Pre-election polls had anticipated a larger victory for the Popular Party and the possibility of a coalition with the far-right Vox party. This close election is expected to result in weeks of political maneuvering before the next prime minister is selected.
