TikTok announced Monday that it will introduce a new update, allowing users to create text posts alongside its popular video posts.
“Today we’re excited to announce the expansion of text posts on TikTok, offering a new format for creating text-based content that provides more options for creators to share their ideas and express their creativity,” TikTok stated in a press release published on Monday. “With text posts, we’re pushing the boundaries of content creation for all TikTok users, providing a dedicated space for the written creativity we’ve seen in comments, captions, and videos.”
TikTok explained that users will now be presented with three options when creating a post: photo, video, and text. Text posts can include various features such as sounds, stickers, and hashtags.
TikTok’s introduction of text posts follows similar moves by other social media companies aiming to rival Twitter, particularly after Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform last year. Meta, for instance, recently launched Threads, a Twitter competitor centered around text posts and featuring an interface similar to Twitter’s.
Meanwhile, Twitter has taken its first steps in rebranding itself as “X” and revealed on Sunday that its iconic blue bird logo would be replaced by a black-and-white X.
TikTok’s announcement does not mention a character limit for text posts on the platform, as Twitter and Threads have implemented. Twitter recently expanded its character limit to 10,000 for Twitter Blue subscribers, while non-subscribers are limited to 280 characters. On Threads, users can include up to 500 characters in a post.
