The 55-year-old male driver of the westbound ute escaped, but the back-seat passenger in the car became trapped and could not get out before the vehicle caught fire.
The 37-year-old woman died at the scene.
The male driver and sole occupant of the eastbound vehicle sustained injuries to his arm.
Menangle Rd was closed for some time as a result of the crash.
Both drivers were taken for mandatory drug testing. No charges have been laid.
“A driver is responsible for the management of that vehicle and that investigation is ongoing,” McFadden said.
